About That Pandemic

Boy, it’s good to be back

And by back, I mean, boy, it’s good to have people in my life, at the dinner table, or on the tennis court — unmasked.

The thing is that there are just a few things I miss about the bad old days. I’m not exactly saying I want those days back, but if I could only —

  • Not have to sustain a full 1.5-hour dinner conversation. I liked reading my novel and watching sports, only muttering to my husband, “Dinner is in on the stove. Help yourself and come watch with me.” That felt like a full conversation — for both of us.
  • Tell my clients that I would travel for a meeting, but travel is only done on an “essential” basis. No one likes to hear their needs aren’t essential, so I am coming up with other valid reasons. I need to help out my daughter, who just had a baby. No one says “no” to babies, especially since we are in a population decline.
  • Find another excuse why it is ok for me not to be fit. When the gym wasn’t open, it was easy. Dog walking, which I’ve been doing for years and served as an “add” to my regimen, now became the regimen. The problem is that my gym is now open, and to make matters worse, we are paying for that membership. I am clever, though. I have convinced myself that it is all about a slow and steady pace, so we…
